And Our First Performance Test Pit is.......
« on: September 11, 2017, 05:52:35 PM »

......the Woodwind by Camp Chef.  We are excited by the opportunity to Performance Test this new pellet pit from Camp Chef.  It combines pellet cooking and low and slow smoking with a propane sear burner.  A unique combination which should make for an interesting performance test.

The pit is to ship in the near future and Bent will set up the Performance Test thread and discussion threads.  But, in the interim, if you have any questions or comments, please feel free to post.

Cool lookin grill! .... Nice heavy hardware, some stainless ..... with a side burner to boot. That would be handy. This will definitely be interesting with a thorough run through by Bentley. .... We'll see how it cooks!

Looks like a hit!

Yes, I think we have decided to "standardize" the meats we cook so that the same are cooked on all pits.  Can't guarantee it will make the cut, but if someone wants something cooked, speak up now and I will see if it can be worked in.

I think burgers on every performance test would be good just to see how it grills meat at higher temps.

Biscuit Test, burgers (Larry's recipe), chicken thighs, Salmon, Ribs, Boston Butt, Brisket. If you need a taste tester, I'm only 4 hours away!

I think... well, I wouldn't be too surprised if it's Camp Chef that really catapults pellet grills into the main stream.  Now, clearly the pellet grill market has been growing by leaps and bounds already, but Camp Chef , really has been putting big effort ( advertisement ) into it all... and by most accounts, they build a grill that really is appealing to the masses.  While I personally have no good use for a gas sear attachment, I won't deny that it could make reverse searing, very very easy...

Looking forward to the first Pelletfan performance test...

A lot of uses for that side burner. .... Sauce prep, warming sides like corn on the cob. It's a nice idea. I often use my gasser's side burner when preparing something that's going to be braised while the meat is being smoked or seared. Under recipes, look at my lamb shanks recipe. There is a perfect example of where it could come into play.

I'd say they have already definitely hit the main stream when they started showing up in virtually all the big box stores. The budget brand models are everywhere. When I got mine in 2011 or so, there were a smattering of traegers around me, but most people didn't even know what one was. I live in a small sub division right now. I drove around the other day, and saw four sitting out on people's patios. One small traeger, and I believe 3 pitboss units. They all kind of look the same from a distance.

Across the street is a much larger sub division. My wife and I walk through often. On any given Saturday, I see between 3-6 sitting outside garages puffing smoke. Gmgs, several smokin bros, and of course some traegers.
