Polar Vortex and what to smoke in cold temps
« on: January 29, 2019, 10:10:24 AM »

Coldest temps in the last 50 years going to hit here in Iowa today and tomorrow. Both D-1 colleges have cancelled classes for today and tomorrow. The question is anyone thinking of doing any cooks as this is going to hit a lot of folks?  Work office in St. Louis is at +3 and we are just around Des Moines at 0 right now.  Forecasted high is supposed to be -7 and low -20.  Windchills around -45.  Thinking of doing some ribs...key word thinking ;)

Cold here in MN too, -30 tonight , coldest since 1996.  Currently -10 at my house in Roseville MN.  Schools closed Monday due to snow and now today and tomorrow due to cold. Not smoking today or tomorrow    ;D

George Foreman makes the best grill for these conditions  :rotf:

I grill more from September to May than than I do during the summer, but these temps are just a bit too much. -20 to -7 plus wind on top of that, I'm not sure I want to burn that many pellets or risk getting my hand frozen to the size of the grill, lol. I wonder if the food would still be warm when I got it into the house, it's like at least 6-8' feet to the door.

Don't let the cheese freeze, it changes the texture somewhat.  At least you'll have no problems keeping it under 80f or so in the smoker.

Right Now:  58° and Clear  8)

Lows in the mid 30's all month. Highs in the low  to mid 40's (with many days in the 50's this month).
The pundits are saying this will go down as the warmest January in the history of record keeping in the Seattle area.

Stay warm my friends... ???

What to cook? Something fast, so ya can get out and get back in.

Friend of mine works for the city near where I live and every year they bring a forecaster in to determine the budget for snow removal.  He said warmer and wetter than usual.  As if PNW needs more rain than usual. :rotf:

Temp from the car this morning. Wife made a big batch of veggie beef soup yesterday so I am sticking with that. 9pm last night we had white out conditions and it was -10 then already. I even had to clear the 2" vent pipe( goes to kitchen, dishwasher and washer) on the roof as it was completely iced over and the main 4" vent pipe bathroom sinks and toilets were half way iced over. Didn't want need the smell of sewer gas in our house.

At -26, I would curse, turn around and walk back inside, and contemplate why I would live in an area prone to such extremes.  I can barely tolerate much below 50 anymore.  Needless to say, I am not a fan of winter as I age.  Winter is for young people who have blood that apparently moves much faster than mine.  BRRRRRRRRRR
