Healthy meals
« on: February 09, 2019, 11:08:20 PM »

My previous post showed that there are a number of folks here that live an active outdoor life style.

Grilling and smoking is a good way to produce healthy meals that can support achieving and maintaining healthy weight, blood sugar, blood pressure, etc., in support of an active life style and overall health. I have a friend who is diabetic that grills much of his food.

What do you do to produce healthy meals? What recipe adjustments do you make?  What are some of your "go to" healthy meals and recipes?

Mostly just cutting down or eliminating the salt from a recipe and portion control for me.

Both Marcia and I have dietary restrictions.

We need to–
  • Reduce salt consumption
  • Eliminate fowl skin
  • Eat more vegetables
              ○  Do you have a good grilled vegetable recipe?
We're not doing a very good job on any of these.

Grilled vegetables are great. I slice zucchini's in half and grill them, though up to this point I have only done them on my cast iron Weber Q2200 gas grill.

Asparagus is also easy to grill, and only takes a couple of minutes.

I am still working on a good grilled tomato recipe.

I use the grill as an extension to our kitchen. I am not sure whether the smoker could do a better job than the cast iron. The key is using the right tool for the job.

What about sugar in rubs and sauces? I usually try to avoid sugar whenever possible. Do you have recommended sauces that minimize sugar?

I have tried G Hughes Smokehouse BBQ Sauce.  It is sugar free.  Does have sucralose if I remember right however, it was the last ingredient listed.  It was ok. Not sure if there are different flavors available.  Google it.

I try to control processed sugars. I have gone really low carb but I find it does not work with my vigorous exercise routine. I was getting dizzy during workouts.

I try to use low glycemic index carbs whenever I can. Killer Dave's is my bread of choice. Lot's of goodies in it.
