Spring break road trip
« on: March 14, 2019, 10:38:00 PM »

For the last several years my son and I have gone on a spring break/opening series of baseball road trip. This year we don't have much time, so it will be quick. Since we are from Michigan that makes us gluttons for punishment, (but we're still fans). We are headed to Buffalo NY on the 28th to see the Sabers and the Red Wings; the 29th to Toronto to see the Blue Jays and the Tigers; and the 30th to see the Pistons in Detroit. Three games, three cities, three sports, two countries, in three days. The biggest bonus is long car rides with my son!

If you could only eat one meal in Buffalo and one meal in Toronto, where would you go and what would you get?

I have never eaten in either city...I would have to buy into the myth and go the the Anchor Bar just to see how much better or worse their wings are then mind!

Toronto, no clue...again, hype but maybe a Peameal Bacon Sandwich at Carousel Bakery at St Lawrence Market.

Go to The Keg in Toronto and get a NY strip steak, baked potato, and green beans with a Molson Canadian pint.  Sounds like a fun trip.

My wife and I flew into Cleveland about 10 years ago drove to NFL HoF in Canton, visited RnR HoF in Cleveland.  Drove up to Niagara Falls ate at the Hard Rock Cafe and spent the night in a hotel on the Canada side.  Visited some wineries in Hamilton area.  Drove to Toronto went to NHL HoF.  Ate at The Pub and at Gretzky's restaurant which is like a mini Wayne Gretzky museum.

Buffalo
- Anchor Bar:
I've eaten at the Anchor Bar.  The wings were great.  But I love wings and tend to think they are great everywhere.  Your food (wings) will be good, but the takeaway is that you and your son will have a lasting memory of eating wings at the supposed birthplace of Buffalo wings.

- Ted's Hot Dogs:
I know.  Hot Dogs?  Yes, hot dogs.  Hot dogs are one of my top 3 favorite foods and Ted's Hot Dogs in Buffalo is my 2nd favorite hot dog joint anywhere.  It's an institution up there and with a few locations to choose from.
They also have burgers, chicken, and sausages and everything is cooked over real wood coals.  The hot dogs are perfection.  Perfect hint of wood coal flavor, snap, and they have a signature sauce you can put on it.  Google Ted's Hot Dogs and click images.  I know I'm easy, but for me that is perfection.

Toronto:
- I've never been.  Looking forward to your recap!

I second the Keg in Toronto except my preference was the Prime Rib and also their French Onion Soup.

Has your son ever been to a Chinatown district?  Toronto has a vibrant Chinatown, and I'm sure there is a website to give you more insight.

The one time I was in Toronto I did not make it to Chinatown. However, the place we are staying is in or very near Chinatown, so we will do some exploring!

Buffalo

- Ted's Hot Dogs:

Anchor Bar is probably a must. Ted's sounds good, I will look it up. I agree there are times you can't beat a good hot dog.

I will second Teds Hot Dogs, I have had them in Tempe Arizona on many occasions and they are excellent.
Ralphie described them perfectly.
I heard they are connected from several people, I assume it to be true.
Sounds like a fun trip.

I lived in Buffalo for a few years.  I agree that you  should go to the Anchor Bar for the wings.  I preferred the wings at Duffs, but since you are only there for one day, go with the original.  For another option I recommend the Beef on Weck at Charlie the Butcher (on Wehrle Road - close to the airport).  This is a roast beef sandwich on a kimelweck role (Kaiser role with kosher salt and caraway seeds).  I agree with the Ted's suggestion, but you can get good hotdogs in many places.  I haven't found a good Beef on Weck outside of Buffalo.

Thanks for the help so far. I do have a couple of other questions, if you don't mind.

I was surprised to find out that from Toronto it is almost the same distance to Detroit if you cross the border at Sarnia/Port Huron or Windsor/Detroit. I have not done either in many years. Any advantage of one over the other?

That leads to the next question. Depending on the route, we will probably be looking for a good stopping point for a break along the way. If anyone has any insight, it would be appreciated!!

Thanks again for the help!!

It has probably been about 5 years since I have been in Canada, but I remember there being tons of signs for museums, wineries, and golf courses along the 401.

I knew about Beef on Weck, but was confused and thought it was a Connecticut thing.  Forgot it is a Western NY State thing, learned something!

There is a Dinosaur BBQ in Buffalo.  The one in Syracuse was awesome 25 or so years ago.  It was kind of a biker bbq joint.  They got into it making bbq in Sturgis.  The one in Buffalo is probably worth a shot.  It's not all that far from the Keybank Center.
