My Southern California community requires that all houses have at least one palm tree and a fully functional hot tub or in-ground spa.

I just had my spa heater replaced so I am legal again.

I am going to celebrate by putting some organic brown rice cakes in the Daniel Boone. That's good eats.

I'm not sure I would survive in an HOA community.   My 44 home neighborhood, built in 2001-2002, I was instrumental in the initial HOA meetings where we agreed to disband.  I really don't need my neighbor two blocks down telling me what kind of shed I can have in my back yard.  Or worse yet complaining about the smoker/fence/landscaping etc.

Now there are downsides, as the neighborhood has matured a few folks don't care for their yards anymore and some have too many people under the same roof and thus 5 vehicles where two fit. 

Nonetheless, I prefer not having official rules of the neighborhood.

I was very happy when I moved and have vowed to never be under the rule of a neighborhood association again.  My current, more mature neighborhood, does have some of the issues you speak of.  I can overlook those for not paying the dues and not having to ask permission to paint my house the same color it already was, or having to submit a landscape plan to plant anything or stain a fence.

I'm all for the neighborhood rules as I think they help to keep up the value of homes in the neighborhood not driven down by the unkept look of other homes.  While some of the rules are more than I would want, I knew what they were before I built the home and decided I could live with them.  We have pretty low fees because there is not much common area to be maintained.  It is a first for me hearing a requirement for a hot tub though.

Requiring a hot tub is over the pale and if push came to shove, it probably could not be enforced.

Yes, tongue in cheek. This is what I tell the folks that I work with that are in other parts of the country.

True, I have both a palm tree and an in-ground spa, two Southern California stereo type items.

Actually, the spa heater replacement was noteworthy because it was the last step in refurbishing my spa. The coils in the previous one were corroding which blocks the jets.

We had the spa re-tiled and plastered (actually used quartz rather than plaster) last summer after leak testing. We had to find and fix more leaks. Now we are ready to go.

What does this have to do with smoking? The smoker is next to the spa. Now we have both to enjoy just in time for the summer soaking season.

I bought the exhaust scrubber option. I also recapture lost heat and convert it to electricity to run the street light in front of my house. Just doing may part.

We have a speeding and stop sign running issue in our neighborhood.  All roads are private so the HOA can do traffic law enforcement.  The HOA erected one speed monitoring camera on the main loop around the neighborhood about six months ago and used it for testing.  On Friday, we got the proposed traffic fine schedule from the HOA.

Yup....where else.  It's funny the HOA is getting a lot of push back on the new policy but speeds over 65 MPH were recorded during the testing phase.  The entire neighborhood is posted at 25 MPH.  I have seen some residents blow through stop signs doing over 40 MPH.  I almost got nailed last week while walking my collie when a guy blew through the stop sign and did a right turn at the same time.   The best one was when a person blew through a stop sign and nearly hit me when I was half way across the street.  My dog seems to have understood what was going on and just looked up at me.  The driver flicked her fingers at me as she went by.  Fortunately, it was one of the few times a motorcycle cop was parked a half a block away monitoring stop sign runners.  The officer stopped me later after giving her a ticket to verify the position I was in on the cross walk.  He said the driver said I was on the sidewalk.
