Memphis in May disapponting
« on: May 18, 2019, 03:46:18 PM »

Had a trip planed for Memphis so timed it for there BBQ cook off. Glad went on Friday instead of Saturday because parking is tough for big trucks. Was shocked there was maybe 10 porta potties for general public. Most the teams areas where set up with scaffolding to create two story bars for private party's. Was not able to even see 1/2 of the teams pits or them prepping meats because was done behind there portable party's. If the Royal is anything like this I will stick to the local small time events.

The competition is today.  The party is Thursday and Friday and maybe even a little on Wednesday as team's setup their structures.  Not sure what you were expecting.  Memphis in May is a corporate party that has a BBQ competition.

The Royal is not, many teams will do their prep work in private, which is to be expected if you have secrets.  But you can walk past virtually any team and see their site and pits!

I've been there and won't go back.
The judging is completely different and probably very "political".

When I was there, the event we were watching, the judges sat at a table at the individual team sites
and the judges were served the necessary samples by the cooking team.

That is half of the judging score.  There is a separate private turn in box like at other KCBS competitions.  But, there is a "show" that is part of the scoring at the team's site.  There are 3 separate judges that come by that you have to "impress" with story of your technique, show off your rig, tell some other BS, and then they taste the food.

I cooked in the competition back in 1997 with my neighbor who had been on a team for a few years.  His team at that time "The Other Team" won the grand championship in 1998.  We placed 2nd in one of the sauce categories the year I helped.  He still cooks in the competition every year, but has not replicated 1998.  You really have to know someone who is on a team so you can get into their site on Thursday or Friday.  On Saturday, it is pretty closed off until the turn ins take place and your site judging is complete.  Then the party starts back up again. I don't think it is anything like the competitions most of you are accustomed to competing in.

I did enjoy watching teams prep hole hog. Got a chuckle seeing one team using zip ties to hold skin on loins after seasoning.

I went a few years ago, but I did not get to enjoy it due to strong storms when I was there.  I would like to check it out again if possible, being this is the closest big BBQ cookoff close to where I live in South Alabama.

Tuffy Stone's team won the grand championship yesterday.  My friends team finished middle of the pack in ribs.

His team has done well in KCBS and it appears he has transitioned to know the ins in outs of MIM too!

I talked to his Dad Friday and was nice guy. Tuffy was busy steepen and fetching.
