What Do You Do in the Heat?
« on: July 21, 2019, 08:49:07 AM »

Large parts of the country are having heat waves, so I am curious if it affects your cooking habits.  Bent wanted to make some bread the other day and I told him not to use the oven because I saw no point in running the AC at full blast and then heating up the house with the oven.  So he went outside and used the Memphis Pro.  Just curious about other folks.

The heat index yesterday was 114 with no breeze.   Much as I want to fire up the Memphis I just cannot get motivated enough to cook outside during this heat wave.  This is as bad a summer in Virginia as I can remember and I am talking about since the 1950's.

None of the above..Hybrid version: Cook outside to provide leftovers that could be easily microwaved to reheat if required.

So, are you saying you cook outside more or cook outside the same amount and then just microwave more?

Cook outside less.. Eat more items not requiring heat such as salads.

None of the above, we get more take out, mainly cold stuff, salads, sushi, lobster rolls and the like. Because of my lung disease it is very difficult to breathe in these conditions so I need to stay indoors in air conditioning. Haven’t been outdoors since last Monday.

Real hot or real cold does not seem to alter my outside cooking habits here in NJ.  If there is rain or light snow, I have an awning attached to the house over the deck which I extend.  Usually by the time I am ready to cook in the summer, the sun has gone down past the trees and the deck is in the shade.  If I am cooking a long cook during the summer that requires cooking during the height of the heat and sun, I extend the awning to keep as much shade on the pits as possible and the ambient temps down too.  Tonight will be a couple of rib eyes cooked high and fast, probably on one of my kettles.   Right now it is still about 95 so still waiting for it to cool a bit.

Here in Kansas we have just been setting up the dashboard and cook everything there, just kidding. It is finally breaking here I think, drizzly now. We cook way more outside when it’s like this.

Meaning you anticipated the heat and pre-cook, freeze and heat up as necessary? Not following this exactly.

I have definitely been cooking less out door.  For some reason or other this year the humidity has been kicking my A--.  That could be because I am susceptible to dehydration as it has happen to me on more than one occasion.  So that said I have been cooking inside using the oven especially for baking.  Yesterday I made a 100 chocolate chip and another 100 oatmeal raisin cookies.  Today I have made one pumpkin and one apple pie.
Why you might ask?  The answer is simple our children and grand children are coming to visit.  yes I am drinking a lot of water.

I cook almost everything outside regardless of time of year, as long as it is not raining.

As long as I can sit under my 11' umbrella, my bluetooth music playing classic rock, the fan blowing on me and a cold beer in my hand I am good.

My smoker even has its on personal umbrella.  I also have a 10' x 10' canopy tent to use if necessary.  If it is not raining hard I can still be smoking.

I put a canopy tent up as well for a rainy day cook a few weeks ago.  I decided to keep it up for shade moving forward.  So I've been cooking more than I expected during the hot summer.  Just haven't been hanging out near the grill as much as I normally do.
