My slicer is an older version of this model. It's OK for small jobs, but does not work very well for bacon, roast or cheese. I use it mostly for jerky, brisker flat and pastrami.

Where else can you get notice of a good deal and feedback on its usefulness.  Love this place.

That one if built kind of like the Waring pro.

The thickness adjustment seems to move and your slices come out uneven. My biggest gripe about the waring. It is only 7ish inch though.

But fo 80 bucks with the 10% off coupon there, it may be worth a shot.

The 7 inch blade and shorter carry of the Chef's Choice have never bothered me, but I also have smooth and serrated blades.  You will not be able to do a 10 inch slice of bacon, but that is not an issue for me.  I have never had problems with cheese or roasts either.  I guess it depends on what you are looking for in the cut.  It is not going to cut like a commercial Hobart, but my 610 has been more then adequate for small home jobs.  Getting ready to slice up 8lbs of ham, 7 of turkey and 5lbs of bologna tomorrow.

Might even try my hand at a Monte Cristo...Looks like a disgusting sandwich, but I have to push through my signature...

I wanted to buy a slicer but all the reviews I read led me to believe that home versions are neither reliable or able to produce the type of thin slide meat that you would normally use a slicer for. I am interested in knowing if there are any home versions that work.

Not sure where you are reading those reviews. The ChefsChoice 630 that I have (similar to the model in this thread) has worked great for me for the past 7 years and I use it several times per week. It slices cold cuts paper thin and I also use it for bacon, bread, cheese, roasts, and more. The downside to these vs a commercial unit is the throw - but it's got plenty for my uses. I prefer bacon cut slightly shorter anyway.  There's also no blade guard, so meat can tend to rotate when you get towards the end. And bigger slicers work faster. But home units are also much easier to clean, store and move - that's important because if it's a hassle to use, you won't.

To me it comes down to this. If you are going to be doing big slicing jobs infrequently, get a commercial slicer since the setup and cleanup time will be small compared to the job you are doing. If you do lots of smaller jobs, a home unit is probably a better choice.
