Temporarily Pelletless
« on: September 21, 2019, 05:21:45 PM »

Sold my Memphis this afternoon :( I will miss it, but wasn’t the right grill for me with my buy sell and trade mentality and how and what I cook. Eyeing several replacements already. I really like the new Broil Kings, but I’m going to wait until January to see this Weber before choosing something and the Traeger Ironwood is still in the mix since Traeger has supposedly resolved the RTD issues on the D2s.

I guess waiting on the Weber leaves me time to research the Blazn and RecTecs too. Going to keep this one under $1500 for sure and probably under $1000.

All I can say is to each his own, the only thing I would give up my Memphis Pro for is the PG500...I am not sure there is anything that could make me give up an Elite...As you say, you need to find what is right for you.  I think most happy Memphis owners will just scratch their heads!

I totally get people thinking it’s nuts. It’s like trading a BMW for a Buick. It was definitely a top notch grill if not the best of the best. My cooking style just led to too many grease fires and then I’d get angry at myself for knowing better. There’s also a few things like steak, chicken and chops that we prefer over charcoal, so I’m trading for a Buick and a Lexus (Weber Summit Charcoal).

Thanks for the reminder on the PG500 too, I need to see if there are any used or demos of those around.

It's not likely that you'll have a grease fire on a PG500/1000.  The firepot doesn't overheat the grease tray because it isn't below it.

Not likely, but not impossible.    I found out the hard way a couple of weeks ago.    I cranked mine up to 500 degrees with my Grill Grates upside down on the direct side for searing some sous vide steaks.     Major drip pan and chimney fire, luckily I saw it in time to pull it away from the house, but it was an eye opener for me.    I will be more vigilant in keeping it clean.    The silver lining is that it burned everything up and left it looking like an oven after a self clean cycle.

I'm guessing that you have foil on the drip pan.
