I just read that canned tuna sales have dropped almost 40% from their peak levels about 20 years ago.

Starkist, Bumble Bee and Chicken of the Sea claim that today's households don't have can openers.  I call BS!  It must be because there are less costly alternatives.

I think it might be the climate of the last 40 years.  Mercury is building up in tuna, and if you eat it, it will build up in you too.  Strike one. Weren't the Evil Tuna fisherman also catching and killing Flipper in their tuna nets? Strike two.  Now, folks don't have can openers (that is a good one, I have 2).  Strike three.

A good tune fish sandwich, celery, seasoning, finely minced onions, lots of mayo...one fine sandwich!  Gotta be Albacore though...

I'm part of the problem.   80's kid (near 40 years ago, not 20) I'd have tuna sandwiches weekly.  Now I'm pretty much reduced to Friday's during Lent.  And it's always Albacore now.

I quit buying commercially canned tuna some years ago.  (Sorry Charlie) Buddy at the beach gets it fresh off the boat and I go down and we spend the day canning 1/2 pt. jars that last about 2 years.  Then it's back to the coast for a mini-vacation and canning.

20 years ago, tuna in pouches wasn't mainstream; now, you can get tuna that hasn't been watered down by water(or vegetable oil!).

Oil packed was my favorite, drained off, but then the tuna mixed well with the mayo.  I can't even find it anymore, more expensive then water I guess!

I am still eating Tuna sandwiches. I like mine chunky rather than a homogeneous paste like you usually find.

I use a single heaping tablespoon of light mayo along with some sweet pickle relish, added to a whole can of tuna. I put the result on thin sliced Dave's Killer Bread.

It makes a meaty, rather than pasty, sandwich which is probably pretty healthy.

We eat Tuna often, sandwiches and when it is colder we make tuna casserole.
My wife eats the package tuna all the time in different flavors etc. and loves it, I have never tried it and still use canned in water.

It's amazing how much natural oil is present in home canned tuna to begin with.  Not sure why the commercial stuff even states "canned in oil".  Or "canned in water".

Had an (albacore) tuna sandwich (Debi made) today mid-way through peeling the stainless coverings off my new Memphis Pro today. So doing our part to keep sales going.

Could be because all the super markets already offer pre-made tuna and chicken salad in their deli sections? Today's millennials do not know how to open cans? Or how to make tuna salad? In fact more meals are eaten out than are eaten in?  Lots of potential explanations. We always have cans of tuna in our pantry.

I know it sounds silly to say they don't know how to open a can with a can opener, but based on a recent conversation with a friend, I am more willing to believe.

Her daughter went to community college for 1 and 1/2 years and last year transfered to a 4 year school and was in the dorms.  She became friends with a girl and they decided to share an apt this year.  My friend's daughter was taught a lot at home about domestic issues and taking care of herself.  Since moving in with her roomate, she has had to show this 20 year old -- how to cook pasta; how to take the trash out of the kitchen, go to the dumpster outside, and put the bag in the dumpster (the roomie was just leaving it by the apt front door); how to operate a washer and dryer and do her laundry. 

I remember an article about 4 years ago on incoming college freshman and they labeled them as both entitled and dependent.  It seems not much has changed.

I was under the impression that college kids ate peanut butter and top ramen.

Not sure I buy into the can opener reasoning. Sounds like someone didn’t bother to do market research to me and went for stereotype “those darn kids!”
Tuna comes in pouches and many are seasoned. Several brands are pull top cans. Some even come with spoons. The Thai Chili is my favorite.

I don’t remember ever seeing tuna steaks in the meat department years ago when I was in high school. I worked at a grocery store and helped close the meat department. Tuna is very easy to get now, just a bit pricy most of the time. Maybe people’s taste have changed and they don’t like confusing their cats food with their own  () and don’t like the price tag of the steaks.
