Insta Pots
« on: October 31, 2019, 01:34:04 PM »

Just trying to get some input.
We have an air fryer that we use fairly regular but was wondering what your experiences were with the insta pot type things.
Wanting to see if that is something we might use. Also if anyone has any input about the crisper functions that some of them have.
Thanks,

We use our Instant Pot a lot this time of year. Can’t speak to the crisper function as ours doesn’t have it. For the most part the Instant Pot as replaced our Crock Pot and rice cooker as well as being a pressure cooker. That’s how we cook rice, dried beans, stews, soups, pot roasts and so on. We did a beef stew Sunday with a quick sauté of the aromatics, then added the beef, red wine and vegetables, high pressure 45 minutes, pressure release for 15 minutes and perfectly cooked beef and vegetables. Tuesday night my wife did chicken in it that was for chicken tacos. When the chicken was done it was removed and shredded then rice added to the sauce remaining in the Pot and Mexican rice to go with the tacos. For us it is the most used counter top appliance.

We use ours all the time, for stews, soups, deserts, rice, veggies, etc. Previously did much of that in a stove top pressure cooker, but the IP is easier to use.
Also don't know anything about the crisper function.

Thanks for the input, what size did you guys get and what would you recommend, it's just the two of us typically but often cook for more.

I bought an 8 quart assuming bigger is better. However, in retrospect, a 6 quart would probably do everything that I need it to do. So far I've only used the pressure cooker feature but plan to try rice in the next day or two.

That's what line of thought I am using but don't want something size wise that we will only use rarely.

I have had an electric pressure cooker for several years. Wolfgang Puck was my first one, 5qt i think, then bought a 6qt oval one, gave that one away eventually. Bought an 8qt Instant Pot last fall over Thanksgiving on an Amazon sale the Duo 7 in 1 used it quite a bit, only cook for 2 most of the time so a few months ago I bought the 3qt version.

No crisper lid. I have a Nuwave oven and one of the Power air Fry ovens.

I use min a lot, country style ribs season a bit of sauce and 1/3 cup of liquid 40 minutes, Have done stew, use the big one for doing a lot of cabbage for halushki we do mac n cheese in it, both Kraft and regular, chicken legs or thighs in hot sauce or (take the skin off first) chunks of chicken in Italian dressing, rice, brown rice with chunks of chicken breast about 18 minutes seasoned up with fajita seasoning then when done put some good salsa over it. Made chili the other night. Cut up chuck roast and season a 1/3 cup of liquid 40 minutes cut it with a spoon. Hard cook eggs, steamer basket 1/2 cup water 3 to 4 minutes release pressure take them out and under cold water. Did some butternut squash cubes, oil sauteed for a a few minutes1/4 cup water some garlic chipoltle seasoning came out great, think I did 7 minutes will try 5 or 6 next time. Even did baby backs in it for 25 minutes then put them under the broiler in the little Breville oven to brown a bit. Sausages with onions and peppers.

Those are just the things that it gets used for often, several times a week normally, could ever do anything in the slow cooker I could cook it submerged in liquid and it would still come out dry and over cooked, no matter what. I am glad I bought a few. That the Nuwave and the breville smart oven get used the most, I rarely use my big oven anymore.

Speaking of trying out cooking appliances Hugh, have you had a chance to cook anything yet on that Griddle Hack that you won in the drawing?

No, not yet. I had it and the pizza adapter I bought to go with it sent to WA, I brought them back with me but so far I have only fired up the DC. I plan to get the Traeger going this week for a load of pork butts and I'll give the Hack a try when those are done.

I think the 6 quart is the safest bet. I've never had a need for the 8 quart, even when cooking for the 4 of us plus guests.  You might be able to get by with the 3 quart if you are pressed for storage and counter top space, but I think there will be times you wished it were larger.

We have the six quart. You can saute, braise, sous vide (yes you can!), and pressure cook.  Very versatile, and the controls allow you to do it with more safety and uniform results, since it generates its own heat.  Also, after the cook is done, it stays on warm and you can keep food ready for some time and serve right out of the pan.  Ninja has one that also has a dry fryer function (it has another lid) but it cost about $189.

Family of four here and I have a 6qt, a few times I have wished it was a little bigger but for the most part, size is right.    Love to make corned beef and pot roasts in it, and 2 doz hard boiled eggs every week that are perfect  every time and easy to peel.   Probably my favorite use is for soup which I do most Sundays, in a little over an hour can have homemade soup that tastes like it took all day.

What model do you have? Does it have a circulator?

We have a sous vide set up but as FMT said, not used hardly ever. I do think we could get a lot more miles out of something like this.

Haven't tried sous vide as yet, but I believe you just set the temp in the pot, with water in it, and then submerge your vacuum pack.  Not very big but perhaps just enough space for an entree for two. Will check it out.  There is no circulator that I can see.
