Swapping Out Pellets
« on: December 31, 2019, 03:48:07 PM »

Why do people feel the need to swap out pellets from one flavor to another versus just pouring more on top of what you already have in the pellet hopper?

I have to admit, I used to “think and promote” a difference and did just that. I can tell you I have added heating pellets (when I have run out) for our stove and noticed NO difference in taste or performance. They might be dirtier? Not sure, otherwise I use Cookin pellets perfect mix all the time for everything.

I often wonder why I still do it.  But now that I have a pit with a pellet dump, I figure why not.  I think the girls seem to like to think the different flavors make a difference because they always ask what I cooked with.  Maybe they can tell a difference, but I can't.

When I started out at this I kept many flavors of pellets on hand. Now Its just Hickory or Char Hickory.

This subject of being able to distinguish the difference between wood species, taste wise, goes back to the days of Pelletheads..For my self and what I can ascertain, the vast majority of of us, don't find a

difference at all.. The smell of the smoke may be a different story..

Now for the "pellet dump". In my mind, the pellet dump came about to facilitate cleaning out the hopper of undesirables. Lets face it, some hoppers are outright nasty with a build up of fines and just about

anything. Some fast thinking marketing person pushed this clean out feature as an exchange feature generating a way to selling more pellets and boosting product features.

When I first started cooking with pellets, I purchased all the pellet varieties available only to find there wasn't any real difference between them other than the writing on the bags.
