Movies and TV shows to hunker down with
« on: March 18, 2020, 12:32:34 AM »

So what are your favorite movies and TV shows to watch while you are hunkered down waiting out the virus?

I have Netflix. There is so much there but it is difficult to know what is good.

Be careful, be healthy, find a special way to use the time.

If you have not watched it, there is a TV series called "Taken" that I found to be pretty good.

My very favorite movie?

Without a doubt -

One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest

Don't know if you can have access to it or not
There were many segments of the movie that I could identify with.
When Randall (Jack Nicholson) had Nurse Ratched down near the end of the movie, I was rooting for him - big time - to  "take her out!!!"
The movie picked up nine Oscar nominations and walked away with five wins.

When things were normal, 98% of what I would watch on TV was live sports.

The past few days I have been watching punk rock documentaries on Amazon Prime Video and Steve Austin's Broken Skull Sessions on WWE Network.  Last night, I watched the live in studio performance in front of no audience two hour concert by the Dropkick Murphys who played 5 new songs of which 3 were never played for public consumption before.

I have a library of DVDs to go through as well as those two services.

If you don't have it, I would get HBO's streaming service and run through their entire library of series starting with our favorite Boardwalk Empire. Almost all of HBO content is solid though. After that, move onto showtime and start with The Tudors.

If you have Amazon Prime, lots of good original productions there.  Man in the High Castle / The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel / Jack Ryan / Fleabag / Sneaky Pete / Bosch / Goliath just to name a few.  Of course many movies to chose from as well.

Two nights ago, I got to go back in time and watch a replay of Game 6 of the 1975 Stanley Cup Finals.  I am a huge Philadelphia Flyers fan so watching them beat the Buffalo Sabers again (which was the last time they actually won the Stanley Cup) was a treat.

Interesting and crazy times we are in.

Love the Flyers.  Shame they were having a great season that has come to a halt but hopefully not an end.  I have a copy of that Ottawa game where they set the record for most combined penalty minutes.  I may need to break that out to watch.

Netflix,
Peaky Blinders it can be gruesome and blunt, but a really good series. About the Peaky Blinders Gang in early 1900's. Also The Black List is good.

I just know you will all run out and try and find this one -- "Strictly Ballroom", an Aussie production.

In order of what I can remember watching.   I highly recommend HBO Go and they are coming out with HBO Max in May.

The Leftovers (currently watching)
McMillions
The New Pope
Silicon Valley
Deadwood + Deadwood Movie
Chernobyl
Succession
Watchmen
Westworld (currently showing new season three episodes)
True Blood

and then the biggies
Game of Thrones
Sopranos

HBO just has a ton of content quality content.  I've barely scratched the surface.

I've mostly given up on Disney plus after finishing the Mandalorian.

Don't know why, but Stephen King's "The Stand" comes to mind!!
Okay, here's my Stephen King story. Back when 'The Stand' first aired ('93-'94?) as a mini-series, Espie and I were watching an episode, not sure how far in we were, but it was getting weird. The phone rings. I pick up and a voice on the other end says; "Dave, this is Stephen King.". I'm pretty sure that I was one step away from a heart attack. He proceeds to ask if I can come over to troubleshoot his computer.

My neighbors, the Kings had a son, Stephen. We had just moved in and had not met and didn't know about the son. Coincidence darn near killed me.

Hey DavidN,
Great story. Doesn't get much better than that!
