So what just happened?

Can someone explain the chain of events that relocated us over to this new board? I'm confused, but happy to be back among pellet...fans.

This site was created several weeks before the other site went down and is not affiliated with the ownership of PH.  This is a labor of love that Bentley and Kristin have put together and they are doing it the way they visioned PH should have transitioned.  Welcome aboard.

Larry Hill, the owner and founder of Pelletheads.com died in late April 2017.  In about June, his widow decided to sell the forum even though I know for a fact that is not what Larry wanted to happen.  Various people contacted her about buying the forum.  Bentley was willing to buy it, but could not afford her price, which was very high.

In August she sells the forum to a person who identified himself on PH as Burk123.  He had never joined PH before the purchase, his first post was to say he had purchased the site. He never answered questions on his bbq background or whether he even own a pellet pit.  He indicated that he wanted to make changes and upgrades to the forum.

On August 22, we began this forum.  Sometime during the first 10 days of Sept, PH began to have some "hosting" problems -- sometimes you could get on, sometimes you couldn't.  I think that around Sept 12-14 the site went down completely and hasn't been back up since.  I assume Burk123 must be doing some work and hopefully will have the forum back up in short order.  It would be terrible to lose 10 years of posts, recipes and experience.

I have been thinking that in his first post he wrote that he had been a pelletheads.com member under a different screen name but had not often posted before buying the site and registering as Burk123.

Does anyone else remember it in that way?

I thought he said he had been "lurking" as a guest but had not signed up.  But maybe I am just remembering what he told Bentley during a phone call.

At this point does it really matter? I agree there was a lot of info that may be lost now, a very unfortunate thing to happen. It is what it is. As far as PH it has been down for quite awhile now. I'm sorry it happened, my thoughts are this. If it was mine, it would not be down that long. I have 2 websites of my own, I manage them myself I write all of the code for it and take care of everything but the Hosting. When I have had a problem it is the host that is the problem. If they can't fix there end within 24 hours then I move my site. This does not take more than 48 hours to accomplish. So, it appears to me that PH and it's followers were not that important to the new owner. So be it, I have moved on and found a new home. If it comes back up I will grab all of the content that I contributed if it has usable info to re-post here. I posted it, it is mine as far as copy. :)

I never considered myself a conspiracy kind of person till this happened...The phone conversations I had with the new owner indicated he had never been a member of Pelletheads.com!

I never read of any membership or lurking either. The whole situation is rather bizarre.

You can say that again.  I think whatever happened must have be catastrophic.  Nobody in their right mind would purchase a site and then let it be down for as long as it's been down.  It's  just bleeding value every day that it's down.

I agree...   It seems almost impossible to believe that someone would buy it  and just shut it down... Particularly since there was some effort put into making some changes before it went down... Myself and JohnnyVanWinkle were appointed 'Moderators', about 7 days maybe 10 days before it died.  Now, I never had much of any contact with Burk123, other then a few brief personal messages one of which , where I agreed to a set of guidelines for being moderator... but I never got any direct email contact information from Burk123, nor did I or do I have any personal contact info about JohnnyVanWinkle ( I haven't seen him show up here yet either ).     There appeared to be some minor changes made to some discussion categories ( New Grill section disapeared , 'new section' ( empty ) appeared... ) just before the initial intermittent problems surfaced.  So, while there wasn't a ton of activity/changes being made, there was some effort being made to move forward with pelletheads...

During the time of initial intermittent problems, JohnnyVanWinkle indicated in a public post,  that Burk123 was working with the hosting site to resolve those issues...  then one day... it just went down, like it is now.

If I were to speculate...  well, I can only guess that something truly catastrophic happend... with no backups???   But what I can't explain, is why a temporary page or something would not be put up , to at least give some idea of what to expect in the mean time... something like 'we are working on the problem'... or  something.  I'm by no means a expert in hosting web sites... but I do know a fair bit about how the internet works, and it should be trivial to put up a single page that says... 'coming soon' , or 'bear with us', or something...

You're probably right.  When I think of "lurking" I think of members that read posts without commenting or contributing.  I may not have a correct understanding of the term.  As Mikro writes, "What difference does it make?"
