I have heard people in this region say something that they feel the water has something to do with why the bread in the area is so good.

Maybe you can bottle the water and sell it the way Lena Blackburne sold mud.

My favorite hoagie roll ever is at the White House Sub Shop in Atlantic City. People around there also say it’s because of the water.  I’ve heard the same about bagels in NY.

However, I know nothing about bread baking or making dough in general. But I do know that I love Amoroso rolls for cheesesteaks and hot subs because they are extremely soft but with the ability to hold together hot wet subs without ever falling apart. The amount of chew is perfect, not flimsy but also not a dominate component of the sub.

Looking forward to Lew’s investigation.

I know the water in the area is termed as a "hard" water as there is a lot of "lime" in it.   A lot of people have a water softener in their homes as the lime builds up in the pipes.  We don't because we have the plastic lines.  I think the are called pex or something like that.

BTW, the rolls are sliced on the top but not sliced all of the way through.  They are fine that way to tuck the meat for a steak sandwich inside.  If you want to build a hoagie, I would suggest slicing them all of the way through to load it up a little more. You could do the same with a cheesesteak, but it will probably fall out of the roll much more than if you left it as a pocket.

Also, up here, the meat is often termed as "chip steak".  I was at the local deli today and bought some of their sliced chip steak - a package of beef and a package of chicken.  They were both frozen.  I will try to remember to take pics of the meat before I cook them.  These have no solution in them like the frozen slices do.  They were also $8/#.

The real beauty of the stuff is water can frees in the lines and it expands.
When it thaws, no leaks.

The real beauty of the stuff is water can frees in the lines and it expands.
When it thaws, no leaks.

Side note on this subject.  We have some big manifold on the wall in our storage room that has a separate hot and cold water line for each water output in the house.  It was pretty cool looking when I saw it for the first time.  I am not the mechanical type of person so it was interesting to me.

We use manabloc systems for all our homes we build. I'm sure there are other similar brands. Makes it really nice when you are trying to work on one thing and don't have to kill the water for the whole house.

Our water is extremely hard here with the well.  On the scale, hard water starts at 120-180 ppm about 11 grains/gal, very hard is over 180 ppm and 11 grains/gal.  Our water is 225 ppm and 15 grains/gal.  The reason why I had to get the On the Go water softener for the Spa. 

And a reason why I am going to now go out and turn the On the Go on, fill up a pitcher and come in and make a loaf of bread and see if there really is a difference.  When you use this device, it takes our water down to 25 ppm and 2 grains/gal.

Thanks for making me think of this!

I know when we 1st got it, I wondered if it would make the coffee taste better, so I filled up the coffee pot with it and ask Kristin to use it the next time.  I tasted no difference, but she said she had never seen the coffee pot have the water ever go through the machine that fast!

We have stuff like that, not bad pressure in the house and bathrooms, but the hose bibs around the house, the water pressure at them suck.  And they cant be turned up high enough to make a difference without fear of rupture.  Bad deal!

I've never heard my wife complain about hose pressure outside.  I wouldn't know.  I am not in charge of maintenance here.  I'm only in charge of income, health insurance, TV and internet, electronics and computers, and the majority of the cooking and grocery shopping.  Oh, and taking out the garbage and recycle. ;D

Lew's picture is exactly what we use in our homes. Not sure if it's climate driven or not. Basically, just makes it so you can turn every water source off individually if needed.
