Hope Lightening Does Not Strike Twice
« on: July 23, 2020, 11:47:20 AM »

Well, we had great news, bad news and irritating news..

First, the great news -- a massive  storm came through yesterday and dumped an inch of rain; combined with the two other small rains in the past week and that is close to two inches in less than a week. This will make the difference in our neighbors having a crop to harvest or everything dying, so was truly an answer to prayers.

Now the bad news -- lots of lightening during the storm and I swear that one had to strike within just a few yards of the house given both the boom and the rattling. Next thing we know, power is out (3:15 pm) and we just now, over 19 hours later, got it back on at 10:40 am.

The irritating news is that I spotted the Dominion truck at 10:15 am traveling down Corkey's lane checking all the lines, they return to the front of the drive where it meets Stevensburg Rd and literally 10 minutes later the power is on. So the annoying that it took 19 hours of discomfort for a 15 minute fix!

We may be in your boat over the weekend.  We have the tropical depression out in the Gulf of Mexico headed straight for us and it's supposed to hit tomorrow sometime.

We recently (3 weeks ago) went thru a lightning storm ourselves.  We were very fortunate, our house was hit and we only lost our modem. Could have been so much worse.  I picked up the modem when we didn't have internet and rolled it around and told SWMBO that it didn't sound good.  When the tech arrived he did the same thing and said "it ain't spossed to sound like that. Lots of pieces rolling around. :rotf: Took 5 days to get somebody out.

Hope you get all the rain you need and no more, the lightning etc. Not so much.
Don't know how it is there but when we lived quite rural, we were ALWAYS the last few houses to get power, it was very annoying.

Yep, that's the same treatment we got. It was frustrating as heck but that was the way it always was.

Early 2000's I was changing my daughter's diper in the basement. I hear thunder, then hear a scream. Look up, and flames are coming out of our computer monitor. We lost quite a bit of electronics that evening, but I can't remember exactly what.

The next day I went outside. We had one of those tiny landscape ponds with a fountain. Maybe 3 feet by 2 feet. There was a dead baby duck in it (assuming electrocuted). Very strange storm to say the least.

Had them install some kind of override if we get hit direct on the house or anything that will put a surge in the wires.  Not even sure what they are, just a couple of white boxes that are flush with the service box and right underneath them.  They are supposed to work, although if a bolt of lighting its the house, I have a feeling damaged electronics will be the least of my worries.

Be out wandering around in my underware in the back yard with smoke coming off my hair saying...boy did see that game Roman Gabriel had yesterday!

Ram, 1st pro football game I saw was 1972 LA Colosseum.  Gabriel and Snow, I think they were playing the Falcons.  We were about 2 rows from the top and the tickets were $4.

Which was still Dad still shelling out $109 in today's money.  I have not been to a pro football game since 1997.  I bet you could not park and have a dog and Coke for $109.

Roman Gabriel...Bent, that is a classic....love it!  I am only in my mid-50's, but as a youngster was on the fringe of guys like Gabriel and Kilmer's end to their careers.

I only remember those names from collecting football cards as a kid.

WOW, just got slammed by another storm that did not even show up on radar a couple of hours ago. REALLY high winds and pounded by water -- 2 inches in a half hour! Some things are a total loss (one cucumber trellis and a red bud with 6 years of growth) and some I hope can recover (the peppers). The flooding is unbelievable.

Even though lightening was close by, our power is still on, a big relief. Tree down on Stevensburg Rd blocking traffic both ways, so Bent has taken the chain saws and tractor to clear -- because that is just how we country folks roll!
