That would be very beneficial to have I reckon.  I had a power strip plugged in to run the fridge and phone chargers off of and didn't know why the light on it was flashing super fast.  Then the ones I have are fine for tools but not the house I take it?

If it’s fairly old then probably doesn’t have a clean sine wave. A lot of generators won’t list sine but if it is clean they will at it is a selling point. They also might list it under frequency disruption. You want one that specifies clean sine or low frequency disruption.

I have a 6000 watt Powerstroke unit, which would not fit your needs.  Problem is, you have to be home for the unit to be effective.  If you are not home you can't turn it on.  The past three times here in NJ where we have lost power for significant amount of time, we have been on vacation and unable to start up the unit.  I have two fridge/freezers, so have lost a total of 6 fridge/freezer loads during those events.  This year I pulled the trigger and had a whole house generator installed.  It will probably turn out to be a very expensive insurance policy, but at least piece of mind insurance.

A wise choice in the long run.  I'm in the better to have it and not need it at this point.

I asked Generac if the output of the generators was a pure sine wave and never got a response.

What is confusing is that we have used our Davey crocket portable grill out on the lake with several different generators and never had any problems?
I darn sure don’t want to have any issues with our refrigerator’s (quite new) or anything else like a portable A/C in case of an outage?
Not an electronic guy and sure don’t want to learn the hard way. It’s awfully easy to let the smoke out of an electrical appliance but I am confident that you will not be able to get it back in!

Yes, the sine wave is the inverter part of the generator.  You are on the right track. I guess the generator generates the electricity (duh) but the inverter is what takes the DC and makes it AC.

Here is a link to Honda explaining it. Granted this is an ad for why their generator is better. But if you ignore that part it is a good explanation. Hope the link is OK Bentley. Not promoting a product, just a link to good information.

I believe the generator (alternator) actually puts out high frequency AC which is converted to DC, then the inverter converts the DC back to stable (constant 60 cycle) sine wave AC. The basic reason for this conversion is because the the generators primary frequency/voltage is subject to load variations, this variation is corrected by using an electronically controlled frequency/voltage regulated inverter.
