A LOVE STORY
Why Claire and I have such fond memories of the the 28th Transportation Bn, the City of Mannheim and Germany. It will be 54 years ago on 17 Jan 1969 our journey together began and we have never looked back. Claire traveled from Baltimore to Frankford Germany with a trunk and her wedding dress. Back then you had to receive permission from your Commander to be married and then had be married by the local Burgermiester before being married in the Church. So on Saturday the 17th of January 1969 our small wedding party went to Vienhiem a small Burg just out side the gate of BFV towards Mannheim. The Ceremony was in German and lasted for about 20 minutes. When it was over the Burgermiester began speaking in English and we went back to his home for a small reception. The next day the 18th of January we were married in the BFV Chapel. Again a small reception at the Maid of Honor's apartment and then we left for a weeks honeymoon in our VW to southern Bavaria, through Austria, Switzerland and back thru France. Now this may seem exorbitant, however, we did this with the change that I collected in a pumpkin that Claire sent me before she came over. Now back then it was four marks to the dollar. You Could stay in a Gasthaus with breakfast for less than 2 dollars a day back then unless you wanted to pay for extra heat. That was an extra mark. On our last day we only had American change and no Gasthaus in Switzerland would except it so we had to rush to Bern to try and convert it. We made it stayed the night and headed home the next day. A year later our Beautiful Daughter was born and we named her Hieka. Yes without a doubt our memories of the 28th Trans Bn, The 69th and the 150th Trans will always be positive. Here are pictures of our beautiful Children. Hieka was born in Germany, Chris was born in Michigan and Matt was born in Korea.
