A friend of mine is on a strict carnavore diet. It is more of a bacon and steak diet. Zero carbs, sugar etc. He has been doing it a year and says he is in the best shape he has been in for decades. It is mainly a bacon and steak diet. He lost weight, feels good. I don't think I am ready to commit to that, but it works for him.

Tell him he may want to have his kidney function checked.  Those kinds of diets can be hard on the kidneys, especially depending on age.

He's a good friend and a great guy. However he's one of those guys you can't tell anything! He's got it figured out and you won't be able to convince him otherwise.

Not telling him to quit the diet, just check his kidney function.  Maybe it is normal, maybe not.  Not telling anybody anything, just trying to suggest tools to help them make good decisions.  Maybe he listens, maybe he doesn't.  But, if some day his kidneys start to fail, you at least have the comfort of knowing you tried to give a friend a tool to make informed decisions.

I was an avid jogger in my young and mid-adult age.  I always felt that the less red meat I ate, the better I ran.  However, I never considered eliminating it—I enjoyed red meat more than jogging.

Have you noticed that distance runners are never smiling when they run?

I appreciate what you are saying. We have talked about the nutritional risks of that kind of a diet and he has an answer for every concern. He feels this diet is beneficial for him.

However, I don't remember talking specifically about kidney function. The next time we get together I will mention it to him, even if it falls on deaf ears.
