Thermoworks Smoke WiFi Gateway Unveiling
« on: August 26, 2017, 08:46:01 AM »

I received an email this morning to order it.  Only people who bought Smoke received the email.  It gets announced to the rest of the public next week.  I ordered 2 since I have 2 Smokes.  Looking forward to trying this out.  Hopefully, it ships on Monday to arrive next week before the long weekend.  I will report on it upon use.

Just ordered mine this morning.   Now if the  bloody thing goes out in the middle of the night, I'll be able to monitor it from bed.   Too many walls to get through from the BBQ shack in the back right now.

Earlier this week, I received the open box Smoke that Thermoworks had on sale for $76.  This afternoon, I received the Smoke Gateway wifi unit.  Here is the unveiling of both.  I will let Bentley do the performance review if he ends up with one of these.  But, I figured some folks may be interested in seeing it before he gets to that.

The nice carrying case that I also ordered.

Holding the Smoke and probes prior to the Gateway

Smoke (love that it pairs itself almost instantly without any user input)

Gateway in packaging

Gateway packaging

Gateway contents

Gateway app setup screens on my Samsung Chromebook Plus

Smoke Gateway and Remote Receiver (receiver still works when gateway is in use)

The mesh pockets are a tight fit so I wouldn't expect the equipment to move around at all.  I need to add a few spare probes in their and the probe extender cord.  Looking forward to using it this weekend.

I got to the screen with Probe 1 and Probe 2 and wouldn't go any further.   Fooled around with it for 2 hours with no success.   Shut everything down and called tech support.   Started the gateway, started the smoke and opened the app on my phone and voila, it was working.   Haven't the faintest idea why overnight it decided to connect and work is beyond me but the tech said it was probably because "you called tech support".  :rotf:  Now to cook something and check it out.

I had a few challenges with the gateway setup at first too.  It would have been nice to have printed instructions rather than instructions on the screen of the device.  It did find out by accident last night that you can double click on a probe in the app and get to its settings for name and alarms.

Thermoworks makes some great stuff,  I still have to pull out my instructions when I use my Maverick, not real easy to set up.

Add me to the "had a challenge the first connection group."
(I wonder if it just needs the time to set up the account to the cloud or whatever TW uses the first time.)
Second try worked, stayed connected for 10 hours perfectly.
Used it again today, connected immediately, simply turned on Smoke, opened app,
turned on Gateway, connected immediately. No logging on or anything.
Two cooks, about 16 hours total, perfect.
Only thing I see I need is another meat probe, with a pellet grill no need to monitor grate temperature, once
you know what they are.

I love this thing.

Got mine a couple weeks ago and connected no problem....just wish my WIFI  on my grill worked as flawlessly as my smoke gateway...but that's another discussion  ;D

I'm glad to see someone who has purchased this device.
I'm in the market for a remote temp monitoring system. I've been looking at the Fireboard, but I keep coming back to the Thermoworks due to the quality.

The only thing I don't like about Smoke is the requirement to buy a gateway for each smoke device.
I'm probably wrong about this, and there may be some technological reason for it, but having to buy multiple gateways appears to be a cash grab by Thermoworks.

I would love to have 6 or 8 temp probes without having to purchase multiple gateways.

Again, I do believe Thermoworks produces quality products.
