Grilling on a pellet grill?
« on: November 15, 2017, 09:32:05 AM »

Maybe it’s just me but I absolutely love a pellet smoker, the concept of it makes perfect sense to me but I want more. I really want to grill on a pellet grill so I’m wondering why there aren’t more straight up grill designs out there? Sure there are smokers that you can grill on, the PG500 comes to mind & I'm seriously lusting for one in fact. In my mind after heating my home for years with a pellet stove I would love to make the jump to pellet cooking for all my outdoor cooking needs. I have a pellet smoker that I can add a gas seat box on, I have a 36” griddle, some gasser’s, some charcoal grills but what I really want is great grill or maybe even a smoker that doubles as a great grill. I’ve even considered & looked around for a used Charbroiler but that’s probably a little too big for my patio unfortunately.

Maybe it’s too soon? I think we are on the verge of seeing some changes in the industry, seems like there isn’t much innovation besides WiFi, moveable grates & small sear stations that require you to shift hot food around when you want to sear. So besides the PG500 which is a tick over my $1300-$1500 max budget & a little small for a cooking area what is out there that does a great job grilling? Am I missing something or just have to wait for the rest of the world to catch up to me?

YS 640 has a really nice feature.  But the hot!!! sear area isn't big enough for say more than 3-4 burgers.  Solution?  Get a Weber kettle also.

There's a few others with direct flame ports, such as Louisiana Grills LG-700/CS-450. The surface area isn't large, but grills such as GrillGrates help a bunch with spreading the heat over a larger area. I honestly don't use the flame port often, but it's nice to have the option.

There's a device called a Stoven that converts a Weber Kettle to a pellet burner.

With the exception of screaming hot sears (steak), I am beyond pleased with the grilling ability of my MAK 2 Star. The entire surface has a very even heat when grilling, and I have no problem getting the grate surface temp up to 600-650°+.  It’s a fantastic everyday grill!! But as mentioned, to me, when it comes to steak, I am in love with a good lump charcoal sear.

With grilling, I probably go 50/50 between my MAK and Weber kettle w/ Slow n Sear.

My Woodwind with it's sear box works great for me.

Low and slow with smoke and then some very high heat for the finish.

In your price range a Firecraft will get the job done.

A few good options out there like the Louisiana Grills & Firecraft. I actually looked at the Lousina when I was buying mine at a local Cabela's & went with the Camp Chef for the ash clean out system & upcoming sear box that hadn't officially been launched at that time. I'm still tempted to get the sear box but can't stop thinking about "upgrading".

I've been keeping an eye out on Craigslist but there isn't much for sale except for a Traeger or two as well as a Rec Tec that they are asking the same as a new one. I looked at the Rec Tec when I bought my Camp Chef but besides the increased area it doesn't do much for me. I wish I could justify spending Yoder or FEC money but besides the want there's really no NEED. Hoping for a used or really good Black Friday deal to make me pull the trigger I guess. Still surprised there isn't more options out there. Seems like it's either China made pits (which are all pretty similar) under 1k or upper end from 1.5k above, no real middle ground in the market.

I replaced an old Traeger and an old Weber Genesis this summer with a Timberline 850. I use this as my main go to grill and have not used my Weber kettle since, but I'm keeping that anyway. I have had good luck with Grill Grates for searing. Jury is still out on really cold weather cooks. I hope it performs for the $$ invested. I will give an update after trying to cook as winter sets in.

Rec Tec is supposed to be announcing a new grill on Friday. Photos and specs that hace been leeked or speculated on indicate it could be a kettle shape similar to a classic weber charcoal grill... temperature range was said to be 200-700F. I don't know for sure but it may actually be intended to fill the void you have described.  I guess the might be more information about it on Friday

I really like the design of the Louisiana Grills 800 Elite, price is right where I want to be as well but can't find much info from owners online as far as review's. I've read a few negatives about the LG maintaining temp's consistently but can't tell if that's with the old controller or not. Also the Elite is supposed to have an insulated door which would help me in cold weather but again I can't seem to verify that. Looks like a decent grill but not enough info from actual user's....
