What a Lunch!
« on: January 25, 2018, 11:47:14 AM »

Had to run down to South Bend this morning. Stopped in at one of the newest BBQ places (they opened last week). Fat Cap smoked meats.  no plates, no frills, just good BBQ. I don't get down this way a lot, but when I do I'll be stopping in again.  [ Invalid Attachment ]

How much sides do you get for $4? That sounds expensive for a couple of scoops of potato salad.

Brisket looks good; How many slices do you get for $9?

Don't know about the sides but the board says the brisket is priced by the half pound.

I believe that's the restaurant that where the former owner of the Prized Pig is now the pitmaster. There is a huge thread on BBQ Brethren that covers him opening, running, and sadly closing. Great to see him back on his feet and people still really liking the food.

Its a interesting read for those that are interested.

Always good to see new places.  Most of you all cook ribs, next time one of you does, will you tell me how many ribs is in a half a pound?  Never seen ribs sold that way...I would think 3 ribs is 1/2lb and $3 a rib...for that price they better rub my feet too!

Same with the hot link, $6 seems steep to me, but maybe their links are a pound!  Gald I don't buy BBQ anymore!

I was thinking the same thing about the hot links.  I know that BBQ is getting more and more expensive, and rarely ever go out for BBQ unless I am traveling for work and am able to expense it, but that had better be a pretty special hot link for $6.

I would bet that link is either 3 or 4 to a pound based on what my brother charges for his sausage sandwich at his trailer.

That's what I mean though, so you are paying $18-$24/lb. for a hot link...I was definitely in the wrong business if a hot link commands that price!  If I am paying $6, it had better be at least a half a pound link!

I understand the prices for beef and pork, you maybe losing as much as 50% of your product in cooking, so right there, your cost of meat has doubled, but a hot link, the cheapest cuts and virtually no loss...

I have to wonder if it is a house made hot link?  If so, it could justify a little higher price, but IMO not that much.  If it is a hot link that they buy from a food service place and just cook in their smokers, then that is out right robbery.  :-)

You are correct. I saw an article in the South Bend Tribune that talked about his starting up in the new location after the restaurant closed in Niles. The are in a good location, just off the 80/90 toll road and near Notre Dame. They are putting an emphasis on catering. Something tells me they will do very well on game days.

The food is $9 or $6 for a half pound of meat. It is on the butcher block and cut to order at the counter. There were a fair number of people in there for 11:15 in the morning and it was steadly picking up as I was leaving. Of all the orders I did not see anyone with a side dish!
