Defrosted - Frozen Turkey
« on: October 07, 2018, 02:55:17 PM »

Hey guys I have two of these:
https://www.foodservicedirect.com/product.cfm/p/2977005/Skin_On_Ready_to_Cook_Turkey_Breast_Foil.htm

Its a frozen concoction of white and dark meat.  i put it in the fridge when I bought it to defrost.  I got a call that my great uncle had passed away so I had to travel.  Its the weekend now a week later and I wanted to cook it.  Problem is purdue says its only good for 48 hours after defrosting.  I don't know what to do.  I have two of them about 11 lbs each so its like $70 worth of turkey - MORE than brisket!

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

If you're referring to this statement, "When thawing, refrigerate in original packaging for 48 hours. Do not thaw at room temperature." I think that means that it will take 48 hours to thaw at refrigerator temperatures.  I don't interpret it as a prohibition to keeping it refrigerated for a longer period.

I'd cook and eat it.

No before I found that page I had chatted with Purdue and they said once its been defrosted it should be cooked within 48 hours.  Its been a week + now.  Its been in the fridge and was fridge thawed....

I'm not ServSafe certified but I found this in this web site, "A whole, uncooked, thawed turkey can be stored in the refrigerator for 1 to 2 days. If kept undisturbed in the store packaging, you can store store-bought turkey in the refrigerator for up to 5 days, or until the 'use by' date marked on the packaging."

They state a 5-day limit.  Hmmmm, I think I'd still eat it.

I Know I want to cook it because I don't want to throw out $70 worth of stuff.  I also don't want to make everyone sick!

My food safety reasoning is not always grounded in science, but I do believe common sense plays a big roll.  1st I would smell it, if it has an oder I would then think I need to make some harder decisions.  If it does not, it has an 18% solution with sodium in it, a natural bacterial inhibitor.

I would cook and eat, especially if it had nothing other than normal odor.  That is some expensive turkey. But then I am cheap also.
