Computer help; add/popup blocking
« on: March 28, 2019, 09:05:53 PM »

I'mma getting real tired of this issue.

I tried a few years ago to stop this spam and all it did was create havoc within my OS. Nobody likes each other, so all it does is create conflict to the point of going full re-boot at factory settings.  >:(

My PC is so.... slow now. Seems the www is all about advertising now.  :puke:

Any advice on a free download that will help?  :help:

Thanks in advance.

You might look at iOBit's Advanced System Care.  As I recall, it's free and scans for and repairs/removes things that slow down a Windows PC.  I think they also offer a free hard drive reorganizer.

I don't recall a free adware or popup blocker but I imagine that an Internet search will turn one up.  Then again, I imagine that you've already done that.

Not sure what browser you are using, but the Adblock Plus add-on/extension should take care of it, and they make it for Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and MS Edge. Works great for me!

For chrome, edge and Firefox their is an extension ‘ublock origin’ . Works excellent.

That’s my go to here..

I use firefox as my browser, and I added Noscript as an add on.  Noscript blocks pretty much everything from every site.  It is a bit of a pain, because you have to manually allow scripts for each website when you first visit.  You choose between Allow, temporarily allow, or leave it at deny for each script.  It's amazing to see how much each website is trying to run, most of which is unnecessary.  For websites I visit often, I permanently allow enough scripts to get the website to run properly, then leave everything else alone.

I’ve had decent luck with the already mentioned adblock plus and ublock. If you use chrome, you might install Firefox and try. Chrome can be a memory hog. Also, I’d run a virus scan and try an adware removal tool. I don’t remember the good one’s, but PC Mag, Tom’s Hardware or Kim Kommando should be able to point you to one that won’t hurt you machine any more at least.

How old is your PC? Even browsers use more CPU and RAM over time as they update them to give the majority of users the best experience. The more resources the use the better experience they can provide for their app. It kills older machines though.

Download the free version of Malwarebytes and run the scan on the whole PC, it should remove any badness.  superantispyware is another one I like.  I have both running on my desktop and laptop.

Yes!  When I was responding I was thinking back a few years to my PC days and trying to remember Malwarebytes, but I couldn't resurrect it.  Part of my tape has been degaussed.

Thanks for the replies. To be more clear, I'm wondering about add/pop blockers.

I have Windows 7 and IE7. I don't think malware is an issue as my 'security essentials' catches most of it.

My issue is all of the adds on most sites. If I'm on an 'add heavy' site, and click on another 'add heavy' site, my pc goes into freeze mode.

Did not know there was a way to avoid ads on a website that allows them, other then top pay for their premium service, or send the owner 50 lbs, of bacon or some such...that is why we strive to stay ad free!
