Last Cook of the Winter

Even though I love all of the food that comes off of the smokers, that food has not been nice to my waist line (neither has the adult beverage that I consume with it). Starting the first of the year I’ve decided that I needed to drop a few pounds so I’m closing the bar, cooking the last of my fresh meat today on the DC and will be putting all of the smokers to bed for several months. Once these ribs are done, I’ll vacuum pack, sous vide and freeze for another day.  :(

Maybe not the meat per se, but the inevitable copious amount of fat that accompanies it. I don’t like potatoes and my wife does not like rice so our diet is mostly meat (all types), vegetables, salad and a light desert with an occasional pasta, pizza or casserole thrown in. We will still draw protein from one of our freezers that has been prepared on the smokers, but will limit those items to boneless/skinless chicken, lean beef/pork roast and seafood. All of that sausage, cheese, pulled pork, brisket, ribs and chuck roast that I stocked up on in the last couple of months will have to wait until spring/summer.   :(

so let's just say I'm in the same but different boat.   Last year and this year I'm going through a dry January.  Last year I lost 17 lbs.   I expect it will be more this year.  (which of course means I gained it all back and more, but that's another story)

My pit will be on just as much as any time of the year.

  • No Alcohol
  • No Carbs
  • 30 mins on the elliptical 5 days a week
It's really really easy, and ... fatty protein foods for me anyway aren't the problem.  It's the "a light desert with an occasional pasta, pizza or casserole thrown in" that needs to be omitted.

Yeah, but you know what they say about "The best-laid plans of mice and men". What I haven't shared is that my cardiologist said after my quadruple heart bypass surgery is that if I don't change something it's going to kill me, so I'm more motivated than most.  :cool:

My cardiologist said that my heart was in great shape with no noticeable or significant blockage that they could see in the echo cardiagram.  That was all I needed to continue on my medicate me for my lifestyle routine.  I suspect that if I was told what you were that my tune may change, but until then it is business as usual.

 Due to medical reasons I was advised to "adjust" my diet.. The words of wisdom that my dietitian said proved to be so true: Just do small things first. One thing @ a time. You can't do it all @ once, if you do

you'll find it extremely difficult...  The only thing I had to do immediately was omit the adult beverages due the meds I was just assigned. The rest was more moderation than elimination.. I lost ~ 17 LBS, back

to my adolescent days. I have been there for close to 2 years... In retrospect, the beverages played a major role..Was it easy? - NO. Did it get better? - Absolutely. It's the norm now.   :2cents:

Just got my license renewed and happy to say when they said "240" for weight I said, "no, 235."  I am actually at 233.  I have ridden a stationary bike or regular bike 5-6 days a week, 15 miles each time. BP is around 120/74. Planning on smoking a couple racks of St. Louis style ribs tomorrow. 

Just trying to watch sugar intake and carbs. Cut the coffee creamer out of the coffee also and I don't drink pop. It's a lot o little things but they do add up.

I've started using Shirataki noodles/rice in all my dishes to reduce carbs., they have no flavor but absorb sauces well and are very filling. They are made from glucomannan fiber obtained from the roots of the Asian konjac plant. According to a number of studies, this fiber has several beneficial affects, including Weight Loss, Reduction of Blood Sugar and Insulin Levels, Lower Cholesterol, and Relief of Constipation.

The noodles are, I'm not sure about the rice. I buy my rice from Amazon.
