I prefer potatoes and not just because I can't grow rice, but it's more versatile in our little world.  After planting half of my garden this year, I stepped back and realized I had 4 rows of spuds.  If I can keep the voles out, should have a bumper crop this year.  And we do eat our fair share of rice too.

I prefer potatoes myself, but with an Asian spouse a guy has to be flexible.

Since my favorite meal is a good steak with a baked potato I will go with potato.   Just can't picture eating a steak with rice.

I had never even heard of a vole until a few years ago. We started getting these crazy maze patterns in our yard, so I called someone. They said it was voles. It's strange to go basically 40 years, and hear a rodents name for the first time.

Normally around our place, voles take over mole tunnels that venture into the garden.  Since they're primarily vegans they can really decimate a potato crop.  Lost about 40% of my spud crop 3 years ago.  They target the biggest ones naturally.  Since then I've found a way to control moles and right now today, I don't have a mole on the place.  Tomorrow could be a different story.

I grew up eating both, but mostly rice.

Rice and gravy was the norm.  Fried chicken and gravy, chicken fried steak and gravy, or smothered steak and gravy, all accompanied by rice to soak up the gravy.  All comfort foods from my childhood.

Seldom a baked potato unless it was twice baked and rarely mashed taters although you could count of mashed taters for the holidays and when company came by.  Mostly fried potatoes and if lucky they came with sauteed onions.
