They are HEAVY duty for  sure. It would be nice one in action before deciding.

And I would like to see a Performance Test of it...A review is just that a review...so you like the movie and I don't...I want to know data, not if someone likes the looks of it!

I would like to see a review of the gator pit in action.  very, very little real world info on it out there.

I'm hearing three different factors.

1) Qualitative design.
2) Quantitative performance.
3) Longevity/durability/reliability.

I think I hear you focusing on item number 2 in your performance tests correct?  I am curious.   At the end of the day is performance the number one or number three or other?  Does a Memphis Pro perform that much better than a Camp Chef?  I haven't arrived at a conclusion myself.  Maybe there's a 4th category of capabilities (hot sear zone, cold smoke etc).

I do concede there are almost no real world reviews, performance tests or other regarding Gator specifically Pellet pits.  Data or opinion, neither exist at this point.

I guess to me it is pure data.

We will never be able to speak to #3, cant do that in 10-14 days.  Having done 20+ Performance Tests on about 16 Different Manufactures, not sure #1 matters except for those that are into ascetics, I have not seen chamber design that hinders nor enhances performance or taste...Maybe I am naïve regarding engineering...

For me it is simple...If it says it will get to X temperature, or X temperature is the max temp on the controller does it get there?  How is the pellet consumption?  Some could care less others want to know.  Will it sear/grill?  Can it hold a temperature so I can bake a cake or loaf of bread or biscuits and know they will come out consistent.

How easy is it to clean.  Does it have to be cleaned after every cook to perform?

Whatever factor that falls under is where I am at.

I'm finding this a very interesting line of discussion, I hope it's still on topic.

Let's accept that a performance test is the gold standard of ... well performance.

Next let's acknowledge that most of us use Yelp, Tripadvisor, Amazon reviews.  We're making our purchase decisions based upon other peoples reviews (opinions) and our own ability to sniff out BS and overall unjust reviews.    I wonder if we can somehow couple an unbiased quantitative performance test with qualitative user feedback/reviews.

Why?  So I can be lied too?

So I owned GMG's and knew the grease pan warped, cuz I had 2 and they both did and I had to weld supports on them to keep them from deforming, and the majority of folks said no they don't and then more started to say, yes they do warp...Or I cooked on a couple of Yoders in 2011 and I personally knew how many pellets they went through...and All I heard from owners at the time was, that is not true, they don't burn a lot of pellets.  And then when more folks started to say the same thing, they changed their tune and it was well it is to produce more smoke.  Or the MAK produces so much more smoke then any other unit and imparts a much smoker product and when I PT it did not see that...

I guess I just am a cynic and do not trust 90% of the population when it comes to things like this...A Review is just that someone's opinion whether it is based in fact or not.

I understand a performance test to a point, but I want to see and hear people's real world opinions on something..

I think there are opinions all over this board in almost every thread.  There are sections for each grill.  That is a place for people to place their opinions and let Bentley stick to his facts.  Win/win for everyone in my opinion.

Well I picked Memphis, almost checked Yoder because they look so manly and pellets are cheap.  But if I was going to another one then it would be the Memphis.

Someday I’ll upgrade to a Timberline or PG500. My prediction is the Timberline will come down a bit in price at least on sale at some point so will probably end up there so it got my vote.

Times have changed since then.

There are probably too many different manufacturers to mention at this point and some have disappeared (or at least one).

Surprising how many are now in stock at major retail outlets.
I was in Lowes and they had a line of Pit-Bosses there as well as some Webers.

Soon it will be very common to have a pellet grill.
