I keep going back and looking at the Louisiana Grills Champion behemoth.

Not because I need it, but simply a wall of metal is exactly what my BBQ area needs. It is one of those ridiculous things where you keep telling yourself "I don't need it, I don't want it", but you still find yourself thinking about it. :D

But back in the real world, I think I am probably good with what I have. And if I did want to replace my old Traeger, buying another GMG would be the sensible move for me.
I don't know it's only $999 .... Seems like a good price for all that metal.

If someone were to force one on me I would want it to be a PG500, but I am very content with the cookers I currently have.

  • I thought my House was Child Proof then one got in

I don't cook for groups anymore and would like something a bit larger than my GMG DC but doesn't break the pellet bank Like my GMG JB which I've hardly used these past couple years.

Really like the CS 450!

Yea I know older thread but lust for the day is Pitts and Spitts.  Proven controller,  heavy duty US made welded construction and a nice feature set.  I really like the bottom shelf that pulls out (same as their stick burners) which is really convenient and makes it easy to work with bottom shelf food even with a full size top shelf.  The roll top lid is nice as is the pellet dump and high temp felt door seal.  Early reports are very positive.  Hopefully a few more people get them and start posting about them.

Tough call...  and it depends on so many factors as to which 'new' pellet grill I'd buy...

If my PG500 were... somehow to disappear , I'd by another PG500 in a heartbeat...

If I came into a big pile of cash, I'd probably do a FEC120...

If I just wanted to explore something new... the Pitts & Spitts pellet grills look nice, I like the 'oval' sort of shape to the Maverick 850 and the 2000...

Yoder still has some appeal to me that's undeniable...  The YS640 with the adjustable heat baffle is the one that appeals to me most...

Of course a nice Memphis would also be high on my list of grills to try...

If I were like really ambitious and had money to do so, I'd love to make a custom pit of some sort...    One of my biggest complaints about pellet grills is their inability to do cold  or at least cool smoking.  My PG500 can get down around 160F in cool weather... and I could exploit the warmer drawer with ice and do something cooler... but what I REALLY REALLY want , is a way to generate relatively clean smoke at temperatures bellow 180F on a 80F day... like , one that would burn pellets and actually have a chance of running all day/night long without going much more than 30F above ambient. Ideally it could also go up to 250F on a summer day too...   But honestly, If someone made a real pellet smoker that could easily run and put out clean smoke at 30F above ambient, and maybe be able to push up to 100F above ambient and still put out some clean smoke... I'd buy one, if it wasn't like outrageously expensive.    What would be really cool... is to have a pit , that had two burners... one for this low temperature smoking... and another for more typical BBQ  temperatures... I'd even be happy if the low temp burner was like a add on, using a duct to get the smoke into a larger chamber.

I should also add...   if I were like on a relatively tight budget and somehow all my other pellet grills had vanished... I'd by a GMG Daniel Boone with WiFi... ( or maybe a Jim Bowie, but I don't know that I need a grill that big for day to day use )

Have you looked at the MAK 2 Star?  Your wants/needs seems to be describing this particular make/model.

LowSlowJoe, a MAK 2 Star with the side smoke chamber may be your answer to your cold smoking wishes.  I was able to keep the side chamber between 85°-90° on a 60°-65° degree day without the use of ice to be able to smoke cheese.  I had the controller set to smoke mode which ran the smoker side at 160°-175° at grate level.

That same setup ran about 50° in the side chamber when it was about 30°-35° outside temp and snowing on smoke mode.

No, I haven't taken a very serious look at the MAK grills...   good to know that they may have solved the cooler smoking issues I mentioned..    Originally the price tag of the MAK grills had steered me away... but I know that my PG500  is not super far away in price from a MAK 2 Star...  but in all honestly...  I had a extremely hard time justifying the $1600 I spent on my PG500, so any additional cost above that is a big factor in my life...

I'd purchase another MAK, though I would definitely check out the FEC120 though considering the $$ I doubt either would happen at this point.

Lots of high end pit choices..That reflects experienced voters... My experimental and modification days are over..I went high end and have thoroughly enjoyed it.

I really need to change my vote.  I wanted so badly to get the Traeger Timberline (and am the only vote for Traeger), but on a few months reflection realize that is mostly emotional attachment.   I'm looking at Gator Pit now and cannot decide between GP2036PC vs GP2436PC.   That extra 4 inches in diameter is another $K.

thanks stljrs.   I know, but there's quite a bit to be said for ones own preference for style.   The Pitts & Spitts just don't do it for me.  Gator Pit does.  I don't really like the look of Yoder (blocky).   Rec Tec has a good look, but the orange is too loud and I really don't need bull horns for handles.   It's totally nonsensical, just emotional response.   Where the logic comes in is the build quality.  If that Gator Pit isn't around in 10 years something went incredibly wrong.  Controller or even entire hopper assembly can be changed out, barrel will last forever.

As far as I can tell Gator also builds to order.  I'll have custom badging and maybe other options.  Look at me trying to convince myself it's worth the $$$.   Food will probably taste exactly like what I get from the Traeger but dang those Gator Pits look good.
